EXPLOSION VENTING
How do explosion venting systems work?
An explosion-venting system for buildings is a protective setup engineered using preset pressure-relief paths, specialized lightweight materials, and intelligent control technology. In the event of an internal explosion—triggered by factors such as gas leaks or uncontrolled chemical reactions—the system responds almost instantaneously to open pressure-relief channels. This rapidly dissipates the peak explosion pressure, reducing the load on the building’s structural framework to safe levels and preventing the collapse of the main structure.
Explosion venting assembly
Explosion-venting systems comprise key components such as explosion-venting bolts, gaskets, doors, windows, walls, and restraining cables; these components automatically open upon reaching a specific pressure, rapidly releasing internal pressure to achieve pressure relief.
Explosion venting performance
Explosion-venting systems are designed to meet specific venting pressure values: typically 20–40 PSF (0.96–1.92 kPa) for windows, walls, and doors, and 60–80 PSF (2.88–3.84 kPa) for roofs. The systems must also pass three performance tests: wind load resistance, water tightness, and air tightness.
Explosion venting design
The design of the explosion venting system adheres to relevant standards—such as FM 1-44 or NFPA 68—while balancing structural safety and cost-effectiveness. It aims to release pressure at the minimum venting pressure while avoiding adverse effects on areas where people congregate and on major traffic routes.
Application Areas
Explosion venting systems are widely used in industrial and commercial buildings with explosion risks, such as those in the chemical, petroleum, pharmaceutical, and food processing sectors. Specific applications include chemical storage facilities, combustible gas rooms, toxic solvent rooms, boiler rooms, and pressure relief vents for gas-based fire suppression systems.
